The Red Wagon Learning Center is dedicated to providing an enriching environment through STEM, cooking and art for school aged children.
Leyla Khater opened a boutique home-based before and after child care program in the Fall of 2017. She started with four students, all attending Island Creek Elementary in Alexandria, VA.
Leyla walked the children to and from school every day while pulling their heavy backpacks in a red wagon. Soon neighbors, parents and teachers began referring to the group as ‘The Wagon Kids’. As interest in “The Wagon Kids” among the school community grew, Leyla considered ways to expand while maintaining her boutique approach.
In the Fall of 2018, The Red Wagon Learning Center officially opened its doors at The Landsdowne Shopping Center. Since then the program has served well over over 100 families in its before and after school programs and all day camps.
In 2020, Leyla’s sister-in-Law, Lauren, returned from teaching overseas and joined Leyla to continue the Red Wagon journey. In spite of COVID, they were able to expand the current location, now known as Red Wagon 1 and Red Wagon 2, to serve more families from four school communities: Island Creek, Lane, Hayfield and Springfield Estates.
As interest grows, we will continue to explore opportunities to expand Red Wagon to serve more school communities. If you’d like to know more about future opportunities, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
